Grand varzuga – final week – 2015

June 24th, 2015 - kaare

The final week was not very different from the other weeks this year with lots of rain and cold weather/wind from the North and with water temperature just around 10c and below, jumping up and down. An extreme situation which we haven’t seen before and that have affected all of the Kola Peninsula and Northern Europe. Odd year, climate change ? Looking out the helicopter window leaving the camp for this season made it even more clear with excessive water in the back country. However, the brave and hard fighting team caught almost 100 salmon. Biggest fish caught 15 Lbs. A quick calculation shows we are about 55-77% – depending on the week – down compared to last years fishing.

We wish to thank all the tough and hard working anglers (40) who were with us this year, thanks for your good spirit, unforgettable memories and new friendships. A big thanks to all the staff and hard working guides, you have all been great.

2016 bookings have begun and with a high number of returning rods a BIG thank you for your support! We can’t wait to be back to Grand Varzuga in 2016.

Bye for now Grand Varzuga – we will be back!

All the best,

Kåre Lundquist

Grand Varzuga 3rd week report – 2015

June 14th, 2015 - kaare

This week produced 100 salmon and quite a few between 10-14 Lbs, nevertheless it has been a tough week with water levels bumping up and down. The arrival of the very late spring and unstable and cold weather have been challenging. Its still quite cold, first 3 days,  storm with fallen trees and lots of rain and water level unusual high making it difficult getting to the fish. Water temperature is jumping between 8-10c which is also quite unusual this time of year.

Despite the unusual cold weather, storms etc 100 salmon is still pretty good, where else?

Floating line and intermediate line with fast sink with a Cascade and Redbutt attached is still the right medicine.

Please stay tuned for more reports,

All the best,

Kåre Lundquist

Grand Varzuga – 2nd week report 2015

June 8th, 2015 - kaare

Steffen managed to get of hold of me this evening with news/ final report from the 2nd week from Grand Varzuga.

This week week will be remembered for its extreme weather conditions, a hurricane came by with strong cold wind form the North and lots of rain for almost 3 days. The weather changed for a short while to much milder conditions and produced around 100 salmon the calmer days, unfortunately the strong cold winds came back again from the north and water temperature dropped to around 7c,  – from 10c – really cold for this time of year. Steffen said he had never experienced anything like it.

We expected excellent fishing in the last report but the weather had certainly other plans for us. The group managed however to catch 150 salmon, Top Rod were Stephanie Warnie with 25 salmon, well done:) Biggest, a beautiful 15 Lbs. and quite a few fish between 10-14 Lbs.

Today ( new week), 25 salmons was caught so Steffen were a bit more optimistic, fish are also spotted in all the holding pools, so fingers crossed for better weather.

Floating line with fast sink, Cascade, Redbutt etc is the medicine and we slowly concentrate the fishing upstream of the camp.

Please stay tuned for more reports,

All the best,

Kåre Lundquist

Grand Varzuga Report 2015 (finally)

June 4th, 2015 - kaare

First our deepest apologies but it has been extremely difficult this year getting through to the satellite phone and today Steffen finally managed to get trough to me, however very briefly and very noisy.

First week was not good at all, spring is 2 weeks late, perhaps more with a very late break of the ice. It was a cold and very tough week and not many fish caught.

This week we have had hurricane conditions with strong cold wind and lots of rain for almost 3 days. Finally the weather changed to mild condition and the last 2 days 100 salmon has been caught, perfect water level, fish in all the pools, exactly how we want it. The next couple of weeks has written bonanza all over it but with respect to the weather lets say things looks very promising.

Floating line, Cascade, Redbutt etc is the medicine and we slowly concentrate the fishing upstream of the camp, that also means bomber time:)

Please stay tuned for more reports, again our deepest apologies for the late report I know Steffen is working hard to find another solution.

All the best,

Kåre Lundquist

Let The Show Begin

May 16th, 2015 - steffen

Varzuga river is settling in – That is wonderful news indeed. The big spring flood is just starting to drop off. The river is down a centimeter or two yesterday morning and it is looking much clearer. We expect the river will be pretty high next week when the fishing starts on Saturday evening in the lower section, but within a day or so it should now drop back to a much more manageable height.

Grand Varzuga will most likely be I perfect shape the 24 May when we start our season at Grand Varzuga – Now the 2015 season is only a short Spey cast away. Stay tuned for more news.
