What is a Salmon Junky?
”You must have hooked many salmon, lost some and landed far more, before you can call yourself a “salmon angler – BUT the take from just one Salmon – has the power to hook you for life” !
That is what the famous Danish painter, writer and fly fisherman, Svend Saabye wrote in his masterpiece of a book “Angler’s life” and Svend really mastered to grab the essentials in salmon angling in this few words.
Many of nowadays anglers have very understandable lost their heart and soul to the Russian Salmon fishing on the Kola Peninsula. Once fished one of these magnificent rivers, you get deeply hooked. Its like to turn back the clock hundred years. Back to the time where our grandfathers was swinging a big wooden rod, over thousands of Salmon.
Good Salmon fishing has always been a expensive game, but we at Salmon Junkies have tried hard to redefine the concept and profile in the game. We hope that you will browse through our web pages, in order to feed you dreams and fantasy – With Salmon Junkies you are just a short Spey cast away from the “Golden pool”, where the mighty Atlantic salmon can grab your little fly at any of its swimming seconds.
Welcome to the Salmon Junkies society
With best regards
Steffen Juhl
Short about Steffen Juhl – Owner and CEO of Salmon Junkies
Steffen Juhl (Born 1961) started to fish in the bath tub and his parents’ flooded basement just after he could walk – When he was 12 years old he took off on a new path and began flyfishing. After a military carrier, Steffen was a fire fighter in Copenhagen for eighteen years. Beside Steffen’s job in Copenhagen, he was also working as a freelance writer and photographer for several magazines, and a fly-fishing instructor for the Danish sport fishing association.
Steffen started to travel in the former Soviet Union in the early nineties, fishing remote areas like the Kamatcka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. Steffen has been working as a camp manager on the Kola Peninsula since 1994 setting up and managing some of the world’s finest salmon rivers like Umba, Kharlovka, Rynda, Yokanga and Ponoi.
Besides Russia, Steffen has put thousands of miles behind him, pursuing the elusive and precious prey, the Atlantic salmon.
After working for several of the biggest tour operators and tackle companies for many years, Steffen has decided to separate and go solo with his Salmon Junkies company in 2010 in order to redefine Salmon fishing and the changing demands for good affordable salmon fishing. Main task – to make salmon fishing accessible to as many hard core salmon anglers as possible. Guys who until now could only dream about the Russian Salmon Paradise. Slogan – Pure Salmon fishing without any gimmicks.
Another key issue for Steffen has always been a strong and friendly relationship to his many guests staying and passing through his fishing camps.
Steffen lives in Sweden, when he is not in Russia swinging his beloved Spey rod – Russia has become his second home through all these years, and he is as “deeply hooked” as so many other dedicated salmon anglers fishing the “Rivers of Heaven” – A true Salmon Junky with a lifelong addiction!
Short about Kåre Lundquist – co-owner and COO of Salmon Junkies
Kåre was born in 1967 and started fishing in and around the harbours of his family’s summer house in Rørvig in Denmark with his father. It was not until the nineties he started exploring fly fishing in River Mörrum realizing that spin fishing did not really do the job. Looking at the “old timers” in Mörrum mastering the noble art of flyfishing was the starting point for Kåre´s journey into the flyfishing world for salmon. Kåre was hooked!
Kåre is one of the founders of MFA, Mörrum Fishing Association, a grassroots organisation trying to help and protect the Baltic salmons safe return to the river Mörrum. Kåre came into the professional fishing world working for a Icelandic outfitter, where he was responsible for establishing and managing a online booking system.
Today Kåre is a passionate flyfisher and has been fishing in numerous places around the world for the beloved salmon. However, the true love or addiction to salmon fishing arose while fishing the last frontier on the Kola Peninsula. Kåre has fished the Kola Peninsula for many years now, including the Yokanga, Varzuga, Ponoi, Kola River and Umba.
Kåre lives in Denmark, Copenhagen and is a true salmon junky and not a day goes by daydreaming of the next adventure to the last frontier of salmon heaven.
